SAMENVATTING:<\/span>
Het verhaal begint met Therese, die ondanks zichzelf seksueel vroegrijp is, van solide burgerlijke afkomst, door haar moeder in een klooster wordt geplaatst toen ze 11 jaar oud was. Daar wordt ze uiteindelijk ziek omdat haar plezierprincipe zich niet mag uiten, waardoor haar lichaam in wanorde raakt en haar dicht bij het graf komt totdat haar moeder haar uiteindelijk op 23-jarige leeftijd uit het klooster rukt.
Ze wordt dan een leerling van pater Dirrag, een jezuïet die in het geheim materialisme doceert. Therese bespioneert Dirrag die haar medestudent, Mlle. Eradice, en azen op haar spirituele ambitie om haar te verleiden. Door geseling en penetratie geeft Dirrag Mlle. Verwijder wat zij denkt dat spirituele extase is, maar in werkelijkheid seksueel is. “Vader Dirrag” en “Mlle. Eradice” zijn vernoemd naar anagrammen van Catherine Cadière en Jean-Baptiste Girard, die in 1730 betrokken waren bij een veel gepubliceerd proces voor de ongeoorloofde relatie tussen priester en student.
Daarna brengt ze tijd door met Mme. C en de Abbé T., en bespioneert hen bij meerdere gelegenheden, terwijl ze libertijnse politieke en religieuze filosofie bespreken vlak voordat ze zich bezighouden met, en soms tijdens, verschillende seksuele handelingen. (Abbé T. is duidelijk hetzelfde personage als de figuren in een andere, gelijknamige, coming-of-age, soft-core libertijnse roman die datzelfde jaar of mogelijk een jaar eerder werd gepubliceerd: Ecclesiastical Laurels, of Abbot T.’s Campaigns with the Triumph van de Nonnen, toegeschreven aan Jacques Rochette La Morlière; deze laatste roman is een van de vele titels die tegen het einde van Therese de Filosoof worden vermeld als behorend tot de bibliotheek die eigendom is van de graaf, welke bibliotheek hij aan Therese uitleent als onderdeel van een weddenschap.)
Therese’s seksuele voorlichting gaat verder met haar relatie met Mme. Bois-Laurier, een ervaren prostituee, die ook nog maagd is, tot grote verbazing, vreugde en teleurstelling van haar klanten. Menig John zal proberen door haar maagdelijke hoofd te breken, zonder succes. Dit deel van de roman vormt een aantoonbaar hilarische variatie op de hoerendialogen die gebruikelijk waren in vroege pornografische romans.
Eindelijk ontmoet Therese de niet nader genoemde graaf die haar als minnares wil. Ze weigert hem gemeenschap, uit angst voor de dood tijdens de bevalling (niet onredelijk in die tijd) en ook omdat ze masturbatie op zichzelf genoeg plezierig vindt. Hij sluit een weddenschap met haar af. Als ze het twee weken volhoudt in een kamer vol erotische boeken en schilderijen zonder te masturberen, zal hij geen gemeenschap met haar eisen. Therese verliest en wordt de vaste minnares van de graaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
