Jarenlang waren ze de maatstaf, zowel feitelijk als waargenomen, voor de meest gedurfde, realistische en provocerende erotische verbeeldingskracht, en gezien het belang dat in sommige seksuele kringen nog steeds wordt gehecht aan seksuele &#x2018;posities&#x2019;, met name met de heropleving van de belangstelling voor de Kama. Hij verwierf voor het eerst bekendheid in Rome in het midden van de jaren 1520 met de Sonetti lussuriosi, een serie &#x2018;wellustige sonnetten&#x2019; die hij schreef bij zestien erotische gravures geproduceerd door Marcantonio Raimondi naar tekeningen van Giulio Romano. De sonnetten beschrijven seksuele activiteiten en verlangens in duidelijke, niet-metaforische taal, en hoewel ze snel werden onderdrukt, werden ze in heel Europa berucht. Hoewel Aretino&#x2019;s naam tot ver in de negentiende eeuw synoniem was met erotisch schrijven en afbeeldingen, waren de meeste van zijn teksten niet erotisch. En dus zijn de afbeeldingen die volgen degenen die direct de verloren gravures volgen.
